DONT SLIP UP ON SPILLS!

WHS obligation - Subdivision 2 & Section 357:

Subdivision 2 of the regulation is dedicated to spill control. It states, “...provision is made in each part of the workplace where the hazardous chemical is used, handled, generated or stored for a spill containment system that contains within the workplace any part of the hazardous chemical that spills or leaks...”

Section 357 of the WHS Regulation goes on to state, “The person must ensure that the spill containment system provides for the cleanup and disposal of a hazardous chemical that spills or leaks, and any resulting effluent.”

Failure to meet either of these requirements can result in a fine of up to $30,000.

WHAT DO YOU NEED?

Some key questions and tasks:

  • What chemicals & other potentially hazardous liquids do you have on site? What are their Hazchem classes? Any dangerous goods?
  • Volumes - How many litres of each type do you have?
  • Where are they? Inside or outside? Movable? Do you require bunding? (i.e. protective walls against spills), covers or cages? IBC units, is there protection against leaks, spills and ground penetration?
  • Are there Spill Kits close by? Within how many seconds?

Drainage - If there is a spill, where would the liquids go? Outside? Note that HUGE fines apply if you contaminate the water system! Have you got drain covers, booms, pads etc. ready?
